The laboratory consists of a suite of four integrated laboratories:

• biochemistry
• molecular biology
• histology and imaging
• tissue culture

The laboratories provide facilities for the growth and propagation of cells for laboratory study, the development of cells targeted for transplantation techniques to cartilage and tendon disease, and the analysis of tissues from experimental studies and specimens from natural diseases. A significant role of the molecular biology lab over the past 5 years has been the propagation of genes that may have been used for gene therapy to correct genetic and degenerative diseases of cartilage, tendon, and bone.

The laboratories total approximately 2,000 square feet and are located on the third floor of the Veterinary Medical Center. The new facilities, which opened in 1999, are directly above the Equine and Companion Animal Hospitals of the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine. This allows an active exchange of information, samples, and biologics for diagnosis and treatment of patients in both of these clinics. Additionally, studies involving modeling in animals utilize three equine barns that can house up to thirty horses and contain treatment rooms and office space for animal care technicians.
